Social Media Powering Social Change

9 billion ppl

There are nearly 9 billion people in the world. Large human crowds, while daunting for many reasons, harness the power to do great things. In recent years there have been cycles of improvement driven by people watching web videos. This is a phenomenon which TED's Chris Anderson refers to as "Crowd Accelerated Innovation" which is contingent upon three things:

1) CROWD
2) LIGHT
3) DESIRE

Resulting in a neat equation: The CROWD shines LIGHT and fuels DESIRE.

Globally, millions are connected via the internet. We can see what the best in the world are doing on a screen two feet in front of our faces. Directly via comments, ratings, email, facebook, and twitter we access the most inspiring and innovative information out there. A kid with a webcam can get the equivalent of a sports stadium of fans. This new type of global recognition does not just benefit the stars; viewers learn, challenge, emulate and innovate.

Ten years ago the internet could not handle the size of video files. Today, humanity watches 80 million hours of YouTube daily and it is estimated that over 90% of the webs's data will be video in the near future.

The beauty of web video is that it is often times more powerful than print. It reinvents the age old primal medium of face to face communication which our brains are uniquely wired to decode. Someone speaks, there is resonance in receiving brains, and the group acts together. There is limitless potential in the power of global education.
