Belarus
Belarus is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe, bordered by Russia to the northeast, Ukraine to the south, Poland to the west, and Lithuania and Latvia to the northwest. Its capital is Minsk. The name Belarus derives from the term White Russia. Due to the destructive impact of World War II, the Byelorussian SSR became a founding member of the United Nations, along with the Soviet Union and the Ukrainian SSR. Today, it is a presidential republic, governed by a president and the National Assembly. The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, which ended World War I between the Russians and Germany and her allies, was signed in the Belarusian town of Brest in March 1918.
