Latvia

Type: Network - Country

Latvia is a Baltic country in Northern Europe and a member of the European Union. It is also a member of NATO, joining both in 2004 and joining the UN in 1991. The Latvians are Baltic people culturally related to the Estonians and Lithuanians, with the Latvian language having many similarities with Lithuanian. Latvia is a unitary parliamentary republic and is divided into 118 municipalities (109 counties and 9 cities). The capital and largest city is Riga. With a population of 2.23 million Latvia is one of the least-populous members of the European Union. After experiencing record growth starting in the mid-1990s, the Latvian economy proved the hardest hit by the current economic recession. Since independence from the Soviet Union, theatre, scenography, choir music and classical music have become the most notable branches of Latvian culture.
